skip to content jack morris an alternative take on business news “phone scams” reading through bbc news this morning, i came across an article about phone scammers. the article highlighted that an estimated £23.9 million tricked out of ‘unsuspecting victims’ last year, which is up from the £7 million the previous year. as soon as i read this, a mental picture of the ‘goooood afternoon’ guy (from e4’s ‘phonejacker’) popped into my head. i don’t want to come across as such an idiot this early on, but in my opinion if the ‘victim’ is stupid enough to believe the call, they deserve to be robbed. it went on to explain the different ways in which these fraudsters were swindling us. perhaps the most notorious being where the ‘con artist’ pretends to be the police and asks for the victims card details and pin codes. now.. if this were me receiving a call from pc c.artist asking for my card details, surely alarm bells would begin to ring? why on earth would the police need your money? “hi, this is pc artists, you’ve been a very bad person, now we can forget this if you give me your money”, i mean come on, how can you take this sort of a call seriously? ‘some ask victims to transfer money, to withdraw cash from a branch, or to hand over a bank card to a courier’. you’ve got to question the ‘victims’ of these crimes. who in their right mind would just blindly hand over their bank card to a mysterious stig look-a-like man on a bike? “yeah thats fine, my pin is ****”. i mean, this sort of con-artist cannot be the brightest person, similarly, the victims can’t be the sharpest tool in the box to believe such trash. i’ve been subject to these ‘artists’ calling me pretending i have won £5 million in a lottery i haven’t ever entered (nor have i ever heard of), knowing full well that the call was fake, i humour them, by plugging in fake numbers and emailing fake addresses, because i have too much time on my hands… at the end of the article it gives us 3 ways to prevent these con artists pocketing our hard earned cash. 1. be wary of cold calling, especially if the caller suggests you call back; this is very true, if the cold caller is trying to save their minutes or their credit by asking you to call back, you should be wary of them. they are adding insult to injury for the victims, getting them to waste their 100 minutes they get a month whilst taking all of their money. 2. banks and police never ask for personal banking details or request you to hand over a bank card; this is completely self explanatory, i cannot for the life of me think of a valid reason the police would want your bank details.. unless you’ve laundered money, and if this is the case, you’d probably have enough money to pity the con-artists and give them some cash for their efforts. and finally number 3. if a suspicious call comes your way, hang up, wait five minutes or preferably use a different phone line to report the fraud; this has to be the most over the top way of stopping these callers, it feels like some sort of spy task, using the multiple phones you obviously have, to call anonymously and enter the number of the con-artist to the police, who were the ones that obviously called you in the first place asking for money. however, in all seriousness the number of victims in the uk has more than doubled in the last 2 years, despite this mockery and jokes, these con-artists must be doing something right. so here are my 3 rules to avoid being scammed: 1. don’t ever answer your phone, not even to your own mother – you don’t know what she’s capable of. 2. copy what i do, spend all of your money on pointless things in order to save yourself from being robbed, as at the end of the day who wants to rob a poor man anyway? 3. if you can’t beat them join them. this is pc f.ake, and i need your sort code and account number for the recent law that you have broken, by reading this blog entry. i have sent a courier to your address and they shall arrive imminently.. stay safe on the web folks… author jack morris posted on 2nd december 2014 2nd december 2014 tags con-artists , phishers , phone scam , scammers , victims “crap friday” as you are all aware, the havoc caused by yesterday’s black friday has been smeared all over social media and showcased through other forms of media such as both the local and international news. black friday is yet another marketing scheme that us as brits have copied from our not-so-favourite allies, the big us of a. originally starting in america, black friday got it’s name from big retail and electronic companies slashing prices the day after thanks giving, to signal the start of christmas shopping, in order to move their profits from the red to the black. we’ve adopted it as another pointless reason that we must spend money, becoming fixated on products that we ‘need’ and ‘savings’ that we insist are unmissable. i must declare myself a hypocrite as i was sucked into the festivities due to the fact that i had seen apple gave major discounts on their products last year; being the apple advocate, i obviously wanted a new laptop… consequently, i woke up at stupid-o’clock thinking i would be able to get a new macbook for ridiculously cheap, only to find apple weren’t offering any sort of discount on their products this year. surprise surprise. did this deter me from spending lots of money on a laptop? no… no it did not. i still bought the laptop. this made me think… is black friday actually a chance for us as the consumer to reap the benefits of slashed prices just in time for christmas? or is it just another chance for retail and technology companies to sell their old products at a cheaper price, in turn bringing higher footfall into their stores, and therefore increasing the likelihood of us buying their other products in the future? in my opinion the whole concept of black friday is a total farce. yes, the retailers will make an absolute killing from the stupidity and ignorance of the country (myself included), but these deals don’t actually serve much purpose to the consumer, except parting with their hard earned cash in exchange for a product they didn’t even know they needed. the retailers make the consumer feel as if they are consumer orientated, where as this is not actually the case… when scrolling through various social media outlets yesterday i was greeted with video after video of ferocious shoppers clawing for wide screen tvs. the one that took my surprise and disgusted me the most however, was the video of an asda store in london where there was such a rush into the shop, that a disabled man was quite literally crushed beneath the hoards. watching these videos made me question how retailers can allow this knowing the hype will lead to numerous injuries and arrests? then it came to me: the retailers feel as if they are doing us as the consumer a favour by selling us their old and discontinued products at low prices!… the fact that £385,000 was exchanged each minute during black friday, the retailers couldn’t really care less about the potential for the fall out. who gained the real deal…?
